Everyone wants their weddings to be customized just for them. Often much attention is paid to the bride, her bridesmaids, and the reception, but the men are overlooked. A great way to give your wedding a great look is to have the groom and his attendants wear custom ties.
Custom ties can be either straight ties or bow ties. Bow ties are often considered to be more formal, but when they are done in a print and paired with a navy blazer, they can also be very preppy. Straight ties tend to look more modern and "city" than the more classic or old-school bow tie.
Preppy Ties
There are many great options for custom ties for your wedding. One bride I knew ordered extra fabric from her wedding gown, which was a gorgeous ivory silk piqué. She then had custom bow ties made for all of the men in the wedding party to wear. It was extremely elegant. If your gown designer does not permit you to order yardage, you can often order extra length on the bottom of the dress which can be hemmed off and used to make custom bow ties.

Another place that you could find your inspiration is in your family tartan. If you are of Scottish descent but do not want to go the kilt route for your wedding, you can still show your pride in your heritage. Custom tartan ties or bow ties will add a nice dash of Scottish flair to your wedding, whether your tartan is MacGregor, Blackwatch, or any of the other numerous varieties. A matching tartan sash, by the way, makes a great finishing touch for the bride.
Many brides and grooms met in college, so it is only natural that you might want to pay tribute to your alma mater during your wedding. In fact, you may need only to place a special order to get ties or sets of ties and cummberbunds featuring the colors and logo of your college or university. This is an especially great idea if most of your groomsmen were your fraternity brothers.
Speaking of clubs, it is also possible to order custom ties made with the logo and colors of your private yacht club, country club, or tennis club. This would be an appropriate choice if you are having the wedding at your club; again it would be even better if most of your groomsmen have an affiliation as well. There are companies that will make almost any type of custom tie for you. Two of them include Beaux Ties, out of Vermont, and Vineyard Vines, which is also known for its fun preppy ties.
Often the bride wants to find a way to make the groomsmen coordinate with her bridesmaids. One easy way to do this is to order extra yardage (or if need be an extra dress) to have ties custom made in the same fabric as the bridesmaid dresses. If the bridesmaids are wearing a basic color like red, it wouldn't be worth it to go to the additional expense and effort when you can find a close enough match in a readymade tie; this idea is perfect, however, when your bridesmaids are wearing a dress in a distinctive color or print.
Custom ties make great groomsmen gifts as well. In the cases where you have the ties made with a logo from a college or club that you share in common, the men will especially enjoy the gift. To make your groomsmen gifts even more special, include a set of monogrammed silver cufflinks for the perfect finishing touch. You will add style to your attendants, and a great custom flair to your wedding.
